Les femmes victimes d’accouchements traumatiques utilisent les mêmes mots que les victimes de viol. Sheila Kitzinger décrit les états de stress post traumatique après l’accouchement et leurs effets sur les femmes.

Women who suffer traumatic births often use the same language as victims of rape. Sheila Kitzinger discusses post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from birth and describes the effect on these women.

Court article dans British Journal of Midwifery. L’auteur explique que les femmes qui lui racontent leurs accouchements traumatiques utilisent le même vocabulaire que les victimes de viol : dégoût de soi, culpabilité d’avoir été la cause, hantées par des images… Elles font aussi face au paradoxe qu’il
s’agit d’un viol institutionnalisé et qu’on attend d’elles des remerciements. Elle
décrit les états de stress post-traumtic (flashback, …) ainsi que la manière
dont cela affecte les relations des femmes avec leur compagnon, leur bébé. Les
taux d’états de stress post-traumatiques sont selon elle sous-estimés (1/20)
car les femmes n’osent en parler, ayant le sentiment que ce n’est pas justifié; ou
parce qu’on les diagnostique et traite comme une dépression.

Pour S. Kitzinger, il faudrait tenir compte de la rechercher sur l’inefficacité
des interventions de routine, une femme-une sage-femme, le choix informé et le
choix du lieu d’accouchement.
