La pratique obstétricale contemporaine – depuis les années 70 – a introduit, puis rapidement généralisé comme élément incontournable du suivi périnatal, les techniques d’investigation par ultrasons que sont l’échographie, effectuée pendant la grossesse, le monitoring fœtal, utilisé surtout au cours de l’accouchement, et la fœtoscopie électronique (Doppler), méthode d’auscultation employée autant en pré qu’en périnatal. Les deux premières techniques sont d’un intérêt particulier dans le cadre de la présente réflexion en ce qu’elles offrent un panorama visuel ou graphique, une mise à l’écran dynamique, en temps réel, de la vie fœtale, du moins elles en produisent une image virtuelle. Cette production d’images – du fait de sa virtualité spécifique et caractéristique du monde contemporain de par sa relative nouveauté – a une influence notable et effective, nous le verrons, sur la transformation des rapports interindividuels et la constitution des sujets impliqués ou institués en tant que sujets au sein de la sphère périnatale (qui est autant une plage temporelle qu’un environnement social) et, en définitive, sur la manière dont ceux-ci interagissent, entrent en relation, bien souvent la première relation qui s’instaure puisqu’il s’agit de la venue au monde de nouveaux êtres. Les processus de communication émergeants confèrent donc à ces sujets humains les nouveaux attributs identitaires propres à cet univers post-moderne défini par son imprégnation de l’image.
