L’accouchement dit « naturel » est l’une des réponses qui se sont progressivement présentées comme alternatives possibles à l’hypermédicalisation des naissances depuis les années 1980. L’article analyse ce modèle de naissance en se basant sur les résultats d’une recherche ethnographique réalisée en Toscane, dans l’une des premières maternités à avoir introduit l’accouchement naturel en Italie. Dans la première partie, il s’agit de montrer les liens entre l’histoire singulière de cette maternité et le mouvement plus large de critiques à l’égard de la médicalisation croissante de l’assistance aux femmes. L’analyse de l’accouchement naturel nous conduit ensuite à observer les évolutions de cette pratique au cours du temps ; nous portons une attention particulière au rôle joué par les sages-femmes dans ce processus. Enfin, nous réfléchissons aux formes que prend l’idée de nature dans ce modèle de naissance et au sens que les femmes concernées donnent à leur choix d’accoucher autrement au sein même de l’espace hospitalier.

Abstract (English)  :

This article focuses on the so-called « natural childbirth », one of the practices that, since the1980s, have increasingly constituted a viable alternative to the hyper-medicalization of birth. The analysis of this model of birth will be based on the findings of the ethnographic research carried out in Tuscany, in one of the first maternity services that introduced natural childbirth in Italy. In the first part of the essay, I will explore the connections between the singular history of this maternity ward and the wider movement of criticism towards the increasing medicalization of childbirth. The analysis of natural childbirth will then lead us to investigate the evolutions of this practice over time, paying particular attention to the role played by midwives in this process.Finally, we will reflect on the idea of nature that characterizes this model of birth as well as the choice of women to give birth in a different way, although within a hospital setting.
