Le risque et l’incertitude sont aujourd’hui étroitement associés à l’accouchement et justifient, selon le monde médical, qu’il soit pris en charge à l’hôpital. Toute parturiente est ainsi considérée comme ni malade, ni tout à fait en bonne santé. Dans cet article, Solène Gouilhers-Hertig s’intéresse à des femmes qui interrogent cette prise en charge standardisée et choisissent d’accoucher en maison de naissance ou à domicile en Suisse romande. L’analyse de onze entretiens semi-directifs réalisés auprès de mères ayant accouché récemment montre que celles-ci ne rejettent pas le questionnement relatif au risque, mais la culture dominante du risque. Elles se réfèrent à une culture du risque personnalisée qui associe la prise en compte de risques médicaux individualisés et de risques non médicaux. Leur choix étant stigmatisé, l’enjeu est d’organiser leurs discours autour du risque comme « savoir faisant autorité » (authoritative knowledge) afin de légitimer une pratique marginale.

Abstract (English)  :

Risk and uncertainty are closely related to birth. In this context, the medical system requires that births take place in hospitals. Parturients are considered neither healthy nor ill, rather at risk. This paper examines women who question this standardized practice and who prefer to give birth at home or at a birth center. Eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted in the French-speaking part of Switzerland with women who have recently given birth outside hospitals. The paper shows that participants do not reject the category of risk, but rather the dominant risk culture. They call upon a personalized culture of risk that takes into account individualized medical risks as well as non-medical ones. Since their choice is stigmatized, they are required to organize their discourse about risk as an “authoritative knowledge” in order to legitimize their marginal practice.
