Objectifs – Étudier la santé psychique et les difficultés des mères sept ans après la naissance de triplés et comparer ces résultats avec ceux observés trois ans plus tôt.

Données et méthode – Onze mères de triplés ont été suivies de la naissance à sept ans. À quatre et sept ans l’état psychologique des mères et les relations avec les enfants ont été appréciés par un entretien semi-directif et la dépression a été évaluée à l’aide d’une échelle standardisée (CES-D). À sept ans les scores ont été comparés à ceux d’un groupe de mères ayant un enfant « singleton » du même âge.

Résultats – À sept ans trois mères de triplés sur 11 souffrent toujours de symptômes dépressifs. Cette fréquence est plus importante que chez les mères témoins mais de façon non significative. Une mère de triplés sur deux (six sur 11), deux fois plus qu’à quatre ans, apprécie son rôle d’éducatrice et la diminution des tâches matérielles. Dans l’autre moitié de l’échantillon, les problèmes persistent entre adultes et enfants.

Conclusion – Bien que la situation semble s’améliorer à sept ans, la souffrance psychologique des mères et la qualité de leurs relations avec les enfants restent préoccupantes dans une famille sur deux.

Abstract (English)  :

Objectives – To study the psychological health of the mothers and their difficulties seven years after the birth of triplets and to compare these results with those obtained at four years.

Data and methods – Eleven mothers of triplets were followed up from birth to seven. At four and seven years the psychological status of the mothers and their relationships with the triplets were evaluated using a semi-structured interview and the level of depression was measured using a standardized scale (CES-D). At seven years the scores were compared to those of mothers having a singleton child of the same age.

Results – At seven years three mothers of triplets out of 11 still suffered of depressive symptoms. These symptoms were more frequent than among control mothers but non significantly. One mother of triplets out of two (6/11), twice more than at four years, appreciated the increase of her educative tasks and the decrease of practical problems. In the other half of the sample problems still persisted between adults and children.

Conclusion – Although the situation seemed to improve at seven years, the mother’s psychological distress and quality of relationship with the children remained preoccupying in one family out of two.
