Abstract (English)  :

Review by Benfield RD, Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health 2004;49(2):164

Eleven years after publication of Maternal, Fetal, & Neonatal Physiology by Susan Blackburn, the long-awaited second edition is available. This is the only comprehensive reproductive physiology text currently available, which focuses on the normal maternal adaptation in pregnancy, as well as childbirth and the puerperium, fetal development, neonatal transition, selected pathology, and clinical implications for care.

In general, the text follows the same format as the first edition, being organized into three units. In Unit I, Reproductive and Developmental Processes, chapters 1 to 6 cover the topics of reproduction, placental physiology, uterine physiology, parturition, and postpartum, including lactation. Chapter 6 entitled “Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics during the Perinatal Period” is an outstanding compilation of complex and diverse material comprehensively synthesized into a meaningful blend of science and practice. This chapter itself is worth the price of the text. Supplementary new content on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis completes Unit I.
