Résumé (français)  :

Abstract (English)  :

By Churchill R., in JMWH 2003;48(6):480

Midwifery and the Medicalization of Childbirth: Comparative Perspectives is a collection of essays organized into a sociology textbook with an exclusive focus on midwifery and childbirth. The editors are all PhD-prepared sociologists, with specialties in public health, epidemiology, cultural history, professionalism, and medical sociology. Three of the four are affiliated with the University of Aberdeen (G. Lowis is associated with Pennsylvania State University), which is reflected in a heavy focus on European midwifery. While six chapters specifically deal with the status of midwifery, traditional birth attendants, and birth in countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the South Pacific, the bulk of the readings concern the history and politics of Western Europe, Canada, and the United States.

Overall, Midwifery and the Medicalization of Childbirth is an excellent presentation of historical, political, and social factors that have contributed to the gradual decline of midwifery in the Western world. It is an excellent teaching text for students, but it is equally good reading for the seasoned midwife as an original collection of essays on the history and the issues confronting midwives across time and national boundaries.
