La naissance a toujours exercé une fascination sur moi, probablement d’aussi loin que je me souvienne. L’étudiante en littérature et philosophie, qui a eu 2 enfants durant son baccalauréat au milieu des années 1990, était loin de se douter alors qu’elle se tournerait vers un sujet qui tient à des questions de santé et de médecine pour la suite de son parcours universitaire. La découverte du programme et de la discipline de la sémiologie à l’UQAM allait me donner moyens et méthodes pour concilier la réflexion amorcée en 1995 (avec la naissance de ma première fille) et l’action communautaire et politique dans la sphère de la périnatalité au Québec (et au-delà) à une articulation théorique et une investigation scientifique doctorale sur ce que j’appellerai « le construit de l’accouchement ». Alors qu’au départ c’était le naître comme question philosophique qui m’intéressait, je me suis sentie poussée à me tourner vers une perspective beaucoup plus contingente, matérielle et actuelle ; il m’est apparu qu’il y avait urgence à réfléchir aux conditions et conditionnements de l’expérience d’enfantement des femmes.

Alors qu’au départ c’était le naître comme question philosophique qui m’intéressait, je me suis sentie poussée à me tourner vers une perspective beaucoup plus contingente, matérielle et actuelle ; il m’est apparu qu’il y avait urgence à réfléchir aux conditions et conditionnements de l’expérience d’enfantement des femmes.

While at the outset it was being born as a philosophical question that interested me, I felt compelled to turn to a much more contingent, material and current perspective; it seemed to me that there was an urgent need to think about the conditions and conditioning of women’s childbirth experience.

Enquanto no início ele nasceu como uma questão filosófica que me interessava, senti-me compelido a recorrer a uma perspectiva muito mais contingente, material e atual; pareceu-me que havia uma necessidade urgente de pensar sobre as condições e o condicionamento da experiência do parto das mulheres.
