The presence of pre-existing pathologies, high maternal age and high body mass appear to be risk factors for the severe form of covid 19 in pregnant women. Premature birth rates are also higher for pregnant women affected by covid 19.

A Danish study on the risks of babies who are too small (less than 3kg) or too big (4kg and over) according to the maternal weight gain for each category of body mass index (BMI), compared to American recommendations. As a result, American recommendations can be applied to women of normal weight, overweight and obese; but for underweight women, comparing the risks of too small babies with those of overweight babies, the study finds that the limit of maximum weight gain should be raised.

This article comments this study: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/563868
"Limitations of the study include insufficiently comprehensive outcome variables in dealing with the degree of severity; failure to consider long-term effects of differing magnitudes of weight gain, whether for the mother or for the infant; imperfect completeness and accuracy of the diagnoses used; more than 95% of the women in the study population being of European white origin, limiting generalizability of the findings; observational cohort design without prospective testing; and study not limited to term infants only."…

"The main outcome of the study was the relationship between pregnancy weight gain and negative obstetric and neonatal outcomes. Maternal outcomes included preeclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, venous complications, shoulder dystocia, complications of anesthesia, and stillbirth after 28 weeks of gestation. Neonatal negative outcomes included birth trauma, respiratory disorders, bacterial sepsis, hemorrhagic disorders, convulsions, perinatal death, and an Apgar score less than 7 at 5 minutes."
