Résumé (français)  :

Abstract (English)  :

An open randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted at the labor ward of Wad Medani Hospital, Sudan to test the efficacy of misoprostol vs. oxytocin for labor induction. Patients admitted from August 2004 through February 2005 were approached for participation in the study. Inclusion criteria were specific women with single live babies, with a favorable cervix (Bishop Score > 5) and intact membranes.
….
Women were assigned to receive either vaginal misoprostol 50 μ (Cytotec, Searle), six hourly until initiation of labor or maximum of 4 doses or an intravenous infusion of 2 mU/min, which was doubled at 30-min intervals until the appropriate contraction pattern was obtained or dose was increased to a maximum of 20 mU/min and maintained as such.
….
Induction–delivery interval was significantly shorter in misoprostol group (8.2 ± 1.1 vs. 12.04 ± 1.5 h) vs. oxytocin group. The rate of vaginal delivery was significantly high in misoprostol group, and cesarean section rate was significantly low in misoprostol group.
